Community Engaged Learning

Newfound Voices

Mill

As the province emerges from the second year of the global pandemic, "Newfound Voices," is continuing to support the development of strong community relationships. While the pandemic brought loneliness and isolation, it also fostered creative new ways to connect across distance and to show solidarity.

Last April, the community engagement committee of Grenfell Campus's School of Arts and Social Science launched Newfound Voices, a podcast series dedicated to fostering community development, education and dialogue. The monthly podcast gives listeners insight into the many passions, projects and perspectives that make up the Corner Brook community. In its first season, listeners were introduced to a wonderful group of curious and passionate minds.

"We put a lot of thought into this podcast; it's exciting to have that community connection," said Kate Pendakis, chair of the engagement committee. "The audio form provides an easily accessible bridge between our campus and the broader community. It also offers a snapshot of Corner Brook life and the diverse voices that make up our community for listeners near and far."

Each episode of the podcast features a conversation between a member of the engagement committee and a faculty or staff member from Grenfell. Topics range from research and personal interests to experiences living and working in Corner Brook, and aspects of their life they want to share with the broader community.

So far, Newfound Voices has four episodes, with guests Dr. Svetlana Barkanova, Dr. Garrett Richards, Matthew Hill (Director of the Grenfell Art Gallery), local artist Tangiene Martin-O'Hara and her partner and radio host Steve Sharpe. These episodes are available on Apple Podcasts, Spotify, or on the Grenfell Campus website.
